Thoreau’s Contribution to Transcendentalism (development in Henry’s life) Thoreau had lived a normal life just like anybody else that observed and experienced negative sides of life. However, upon his realization, he chose to reside in a house in the woods alone for sometime.

This quote by Ernest Hemingway was made after the era of transcendentalism, but I believe that the idea came from the transcendentalists. In Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, he writes “I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartanlike as to put to rout all that was not life,” Among Transcendentalists’ core beliefs was an ideal spiritual state.
As Henry D. Thoreau, one of the founding father to transcendentalism, had said in his famous essay Walden, “How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.” However, living in a society that believes that a perfect city is composed of same or similar social norms makes this task close to impossible to achieve.
Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau are two primary authors and promoters of Transcendentalism. In this paper I will be focusing on Emerson’s Nature and Thoreau’s Walden, or Life in the Woods, from now on to be referred to as simply Walden, to show the rebellion against religion and the quest to know one’s self through a different.
